Mama magazine is an independent magazine published by Green mama cic, a registered community interest company.
What is a community interest company?
A legal business entity introduced by the Government in 2005. The objective of a community interest company (or social enterprise) is to use business solutions to achieve public good.
They operate in all kinds of business sectors but most cic’s are run by entrepreneurs who want to benefit the local community in a form other than a charity. They are primarily run as self-sufficient businesses and as well as financial aims they have social objectives too.
How does this apply to Kent Mama?
We’ve always felt strongly that we wanted to produce a publication that promoted local businesses but that also provided a wide range of information on subjects such as services and support for local families, low cost activities, parks and projects taking place in our schools and health care services.
By setting up the business as a community interest company we provide readers and advertisers with the best of both worlds. Our commercial experience means we understand the need of advertisers to get returns on their spend and by creating a publication that meets a real need amongst local families for relevant information we have a magazine that has longevity, is read and respected and has excellent distribution.
Our status as a not-for-profit organisation has enabled us to distribute the magazine to places many purely commercial publications can’t such as via midwives, health visitors, schools and libraries. So parents are more likely to have access to a copy of the publication and advertisers are able to reach the parents they want to target with very little waste.
